    What you'll do here:

    The Career Specialist/Career Connector assists a diverse pool of individuals and program participants with their career planning and career decision-making process, including career counseling, assessment, and job search assistance and retention services. This hybrid role will split time between the Des Moines Career Connection Center and the Johnston headquarters. 

     

    Responsibilities

    • Provides employment services, comprehensive case management services, and career planning services to a diverse population of individuals and program participants
    • Greets and assists individuals at the Career Connection Center
    • Conducts individual and group training classes on all aspects of career exploration, work readiness, resume writing, application completion, job search, interviewing and maintaining employment
    • Conducts program participant training include orientation, work practices and safety training
    • Conducts job development and placement through communications with prospective job providers/employers
    • Motivates program participants to achieve vocational goals
    • Develops, implements and presents Individual Service Plans (ISP)
    • Facilitates onsite hiring events through partnerships with local employers
    • Maintains confidentiality consistent with HIPAA requirements and ensures safety of participants
    • Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Career Connection Center through shared duties of office maintenance & housekeeping, outreach, event management and communication
    • Maintains written and hard copy confidential case files, documents participant progress, prepares progress reports, billing reports, case notes, and completes employment retention documentation

    *This position requires some local travel within the metro area, a valid Iowa driver license, a good driving record, and proof of personal vehicle insurance with a minimum of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident auto insurance liability coverage.

    Qualifications

    What you'll need:

    • Bi-lingual fluency (e.g., English/Spanish) highly desired
    • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or possess equivalent experience (6-8 years)
    • One year of related experience is required. Experience coaching or training others is preferred.
    • Ability to pass Nationally Recognized Employment Support Professional Certification – ASPE’s Certified Employment Support Professionals (CESP) Exam
    • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification
    • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and dependent adult and child abuse background check
    • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to work with all levels of individuals and diverse populations
    • Must have patience, understanding, flexibility and ability to adjust to unexpected or different situations, and ability to learn and apply new concepts and ideas
    • Ability to work under pressure, maintain accuracy and meet deadlines
    • Ability to work cooperatively with team members, individuals with disabilities, and the public in a professional manner
    • Must be able to use Microsoft Office suite

    "I assist people find employment by making contacts in the community and referring people to these employers. Fill out documentation including narratives, quarterly updates, ISPs, and others. Communicate with different teams including care managers, family members, and community partners. Support people in different stages in life by providing vocational guidance. Look for creative solutions to different challenges our participants serve."

    "Ability to manage your time, excellent work ethic, ability to keep calm at stressful times, effective communication in written and oral formats, ability to come up with creative solutions at diverse challenging situations, being comfortable advocating for the Goodwill mission and the participants that we serve in different platforms, be a fast-learner with a lot of initiative and be able comfortable with asking questions when needed rather than waiting for someone to explain it to you."
